What to Do If You Encounter ICE

Following Donald Trump’s inauguration, we understand the growing concerns about ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids and inspections. Having accurate information can help protect your rights. Below are key steps and important points to follow if you encounter ICE.

What to Do If ICE Comes to Your Home:

  • You are not required to open the door: ICE agents cannot enter your home without a valid court order or search warrant. Verify their identification and do not allow entry without proper authorization.
  • Do not present false documents: Never provide fake IDs or documents under any circumstances. False statements can lead to serious legal consequences.
  • Do not lie: Provide truthful and honest information to ICE agents. Misrepresentation can result in legal complications.
  • Be cautious before signing documents: Do not sign anything you do not understand or are not required to. Consult an attorney before signing.
  • Exercise your right to remain silent: ICE cannot force you to answer questions. You have the right to remain silent and avoid making statements.

What to Do If ICE Comes to Your Workplace:

  • Stay calm and do not run: Panicking or attempting to flee can worsen the situation. Remain composed and assess your circumstances.
  • Ask to see a valid search warrant: ICE agents must have a court-issued warrant to enter a workplace. Do not permit entry without proper documentation.
  • Exercise your right to remain silent: You are not obligated to speak. Use your right to silence in the workplace as well.
  • Do not present false documents or lie: Never provide fake information or documents. Doing so can create additional problems.

Documents to Carry with You:

In case of an ICE encounter, keep the following documents readily available:

  • Identification: Valid ID such as a passport or Green Card (copy is acceptable).
  • Immigration Status Documents: Visa, work permit, residence card, or asylum application receipt if applicable.
  • Proof of Current Address: Utility bill, bank statement, or other documents showing your address.
  • Emergency Contact Information: Your attorney’s or a trusted contact’s details for quick communication in urgent situations.

Important Notes:

  • Keep documents organized and accessible: Always maintain your documents in an orderly and reachable manner to respond quickly in adverse situations.
  • Avoid association with individuals involved in crime: Stay away from those linked to criminal activity for your safety and legal standing.
  • Obey traffic and public laws: Follow laws on the road and in public to avoid unnecessary encounters with ICE.
  • Update address changes and track immigration processes: Report address changes promptly and stay on top of your immigration filings.
